Writing Workshops

Our writing workshop is designed for 5th and 6th-grade students who are eager to explore and enhance their writing abilities. This workshop will guide young authors through the world of structured writing, focusing on informative and narrative texts, and the art of using technology to enhance writing and collaboration.

Workshop Objectives:

  1. Informative/Explanatory Writing (W.5.2, W.6.2):

Students will be taught to create informative texts with clarity and depth. They will learn to introduce topics clearly, provide general observations, and logically group related information using paragraphs and sections. Emphasis will be placed on using facts, definitions, and examples to develop topics, with the inclusion of multimedia aids like illustrations, charts, or tables. Participants will also work on using precise language and domain-specific vocabulary to effectively convey ideas.

  2. Narrative Writing (W.5.3, W.6.3):

In this segment, students will craft engaging narratives based on real or imagined experiences. They will learn to establish a context and introduce characters, using dialogue and description to develop experiences and events. Instruction will focus on utilizing transitional words and phrases to manage event sequences and employing sensory details to create vivid imagery, ensuring their narratives are compelling and complete.

  3. Technology Integration in Writing (W.5.6, W.6.6):

Students will explore the use of technology to produce, publish, and share their writing. They will learn to use the Internet and word processing tools to enhance their writing and collaborate with peers. Guidance will be provided on keyboarding skills and how to present information efficiently, fostering a modern approach to writing and communication.

Activities Include:

  1. Writing Exercises: Engage in various writing tasks that align with the learning objectives, allowing students to practice and apply new skills.

  2. Peer Feedback and Collaboration: Work in small groups to share writings and provide feedback, encouraging collaborative learning and improvement.

  3. Multimedia Projects: Incorporate digital tools to create presentations that complement written work, enhancing both creativity and technical skills.
