7th and 8th Grade Workshops

Dive into our writing workshop tailored for 7th and 8th-grade students eager to refine their writing skills. This workshop is designed to challenge and inspire young writers through engaging activities that focus on informative and narrative writing, as well as the integration of technology to enhance their writing process.

Workshop Objectives:
 

1. Informative/Explanatory Writing (W.7.2, W.8.2):
    

   • Students will learn to craft informative texts with clarity and sophistication. They will be guided to establish a thesis statement and organize ideas using strategies such as definition, classification, and comparison/contrast. The use of formatting, graphics, and multimedia will be encouraged to aid comprehension. Participants will focus on developing topics with relevant facts and examples, using precise language and maintaining a formal style to convey ideas effectively.
      

2. Narrative Writing (W.7.3, W.8.3):
    

   • In this segment, students will explore the art of narrative writing by engaging and orienting the reader with context and character introduction. They will use advanced narrative techniques, including dialogue, pacing, and description, to develop experiences and characters. Instruction will emphasize the use of transition words to manage sequences and shifts in time and setting, culminating in narratives with thoughtful conclusions that reflect on the experiences or events.
      

3. Technology Integration in Writing (W.7.6, W.8.6):
    

   • Students will explore the use of technology to produce, publish, and share their writing. They will utilize the Internet and digital tools to enhance their writing and collaborate with peers. Emphasis will be placed on linking and citing sources, presenting information efficiently, and interacting with others in a digital environment.
      

Activities Include:
 

• Writing Challenges and Prompts: Engage in creative writing exercises to practice new techniques and stimulate creativity.
   

• Peer Review Workshops: Collaborate with classmates to share work, provide feedback, and learn from each other's perspectives.
   

• Digital Storytelling Projects: Use digital tools to create multimedia presentations that complement and enhance written narratives.
